The Morning After Ferguson
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:17-21
Today, I find myself sitting in lamentation. I am not angry so much as I am grieved that for all the speak of equality and civil rights yet again I see how the system has failed my people. The system is ALWAYS going to fail my people. This is not a flippant statement made in a fit of sadness, it's the truth. The flawed, broken system of courts, legislative bodies and governance that make up the US Government will continuously fail us. And that's ok. Its ok because I am awake to the false soteriology that the state will be my saviour and am resting today in knowing God alone is my salvation."My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness...". The words of that old song are my banner this morning. I listened to a song that reminded me to be still and know that God is, well God; it was the only way I could sleep last night. Every time I woke up I let the words wash over me: I will be still and KNOW.That's my word of encouragement to my people right now. Be still and know that God sees you. Cry out and let your grief surface. Do not repay the evil of this facade of a justice system with any evil; let the God of true justice see you and your beloved avenged. And as hard as this is to do in this situation, love. Love deeply, love profoundly, love actively but love. Push back by exhibiting love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self control for against these things there is no law. And if law is erected against such things, break those. Be the peace and justice you want to see for this land, actively pursuing both these things with everything you have.May the God of all glory, who stands with the downtrodden and oppressed, bring us comfort and peace in the days to come.
